Prof. Dr. Jan Oster, LL.M. (Berkeley)

Jan Oster ist Inhaber der Professur für Bürgerliches Recht, Wirtschaftsrecht, Medienrecht, Daten- und Digitalisierungsrecht an der Universität Osnabrück. Professor Oster forscht zu Rechtsfragen der Digitalisierung, insbesondere dem Recht der Künstlichen Intelligenz, zum Daten- und Informationsrecht sowie zum Medienrecht. Professor Oster studierte Rechtswissenschaften in Mainz und Berkeley. Nach seiner Promotion an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz forschte und lehrte er von 2009 bis 2013 als DAAD Lecturer in Law am King’s College London und von 2014 bis 2022 als Assistant Professor for EU Law and Institutions an der Universität Leiden. 2018 habilitierte er sich an der Philipps-Universität Marburg. Er hat Lehraufträge für Internationales und Vergleichendes Medienrecht an der Universität Luxemburg und für Urheber- und Medienrecht, IT-Recht und den Gewerblichen Rechtsschutz bei der Rechtsanwaltskammer Koblenz. Jan Oster hat Vorträge in Australien, Belgien, Deutschland, England, Finnland, Frankreich, Irland, Luxemburg, den Niederlanden, Schottland, Türkei, den USA und Wales gehalten. Von 2009 bis 2021 arbeitete er zudem als selbständiger Rechtsanwalt und als Of Counsel für eine Kölner Rechtsanwaltskanzlei. Professor Oster ist Mitglied des Editorial Board der Zeitschrift Communication Law and Policy und Mitherausgeber der UFITA Zeitschrift für Medienrecht und Medienwissenschaft. Von September bis Dezember 2023 war er außerdem Mitglied der Ethikkommission des Österreichischen Rundfunks (ORF).
Jan Oster is Professor for Private Law, Business Law, Media Law, Data Law and Digital Law at the University of Osnabrück. Professor Oster’s research focusses on legal questions of digitalization, especially the law of artificial intelligence, data and information law as well as media law. Professor Oster studied law at the universities of Mainz and Berkeley. Having finished his PhD at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, he worked as the DAAD Lecturer in Law at King’s College London from 2009 to 2013 and as an Assistant Professor for EU Law and Institutions at Leiden University from 2014 to 2022. In 2018, he completed his qualifying post-PhD thesis (Habilitation) at the Philipps University of Marburg. He holds visiting lectureships for International and Comparative Media Law and the University of Luxembourg and for Copyright, Media, IT and IP Law with the Bar Association in Koblenz. Jan Oster has given speeches and presentations in Australia, Belgium, Germany, England, Finland, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Scotland, Turkey, the US, and Wales. Between 2009 and 2021, he also worked as a self-employed advocate and as Of Counsel for a Cologne-based law firm. Professor Oster is an Editorial Board member of Communication Law and Policy and co-editor of the journal for media law and media studies UFITA Zeitschrift für Medienrecht und Medienwissenschaft. He was a member of the Ethics Committee of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) from September to December 2023.
